You’re probably tired of staring in your skincare cabinet and wondering which moisturizer you should choose. You’re not the only one. Choosing the right moisturizer from so many options can be a daunting task. But do not worry! You can now make an informed decision about whether to use cream or gel moisturizers for your skin.
Let’s first ask ourselves why we feel overwhelmed by the sheer variety of skincare products on offer. We’re overwhelmed by the sheer number of skincare products available. Is it that we don’t know which products are best for our skin or because we get bombarded with endless trends and recommendations? Finding the right moisturizer comes down to knowing your skin’s needs and when to change things up. To help you navigate, we’ve spoken to board-certified dermatologists Noah Gratch MD, FAAD and Dara Spearman MD, FAAD.
What is a Gel Moisturizer?
Dr. Gratch explains that a gel moisturizer is an instantaneous water-based formulation which provides moisture and hydration to the skin. Gel moisturizers have a cooling, lightweight effect and are usually clear. They are perfect for those who have oily or combination-type skin as they do not leave an oily residue. Dr. Spearman says that gel moisturizers can also be used by those with facial hair as they do not leave a white cast. They can also be worn under makeup.
What is a Cream Moisturizer?
Dr. Gratch says that cream moisturizers are thicker because they contain emollients and lock in moisture. Cream moisturizers work well for dry skin because they repair cracked and dry areas. Dr. Spearman says that cream moisturizers can be especially beneficial for mature skin. They help restore the skin’s natural moisturizers, and provide extra moisture in colder climates.
Choose Between the Two
How do you decide between a cream or gel moisturizer? All depends on your skin type and the environment. If you have mature, dry skin and live in an environment that is cold and dry, a cream moisturiser might be the best option for you. If you have combination or oily skin and live in an environment that is humid, a gel-based moisturizer may be better suited for you. Gel-based moisturizers are not suitable for very dry skin. Cream moisturizers, on the other hand, can clog pores or cause breakouts.
Practical Tips
Skin Type: If your skin is dry and mature, you should choose a cream moisturizer. If you have combination or oily skin, choose a gel moisturizer.
Environmental Factors: Gel moisturizers are best used in the warmer months, or under makeup. Cream moisturizers should be used in the colder months to add extra hydration.
Gel moisturizers work well for the daytime, while cream moisturizers provide a deeper level of hydration at night.
Take Sarah as an example. She has combination skin, and lives in an humid climate. She uses a gel moisturiser during the day to keep skin hydrated and not feel greasy. She switches to a cream moisturiser at night to provide extra moisture while she sleeps. This routine keeps her healthy and balanced skin. It’s not just about following the latest trends, but also about knowing your skin’s needs. Listen to your skin, and adjust your routine accordingly. Remember that your skin is the largest organ in your body and deserves to be treated with care.
